It is generally advisable to renew the filter sand every 3 or 4 years. In case you use chemical treatments with copper sulfate (multi-action tablets) it would be advisable to do it every 2 years. In any case, the first thing you should do is make sure of the model and specifications of your filter to see how much sand you need to replace.
If, for example, your pool is 48m3, we assume that the filter should be around 14m3/h. Models of these capacities work with loads of 100 to 150 kg of sand.
Below is an example of sand loads depending on the capacity of the filter. It is advisable to check what load your particular filter model needs in the instruction manual or by contacting your filter manufacturer directly.
- 4m3/h Filter -Sand Load: 25 kg
- 5m3/h Filter -Sand Load: 40 kg
- 7.5m3/h Filter - Sand Load: 70 kg
- 9.5m3/h Filter - Sand Load: 100 kg
- Filter of 11.5m3/h- Sand Load: 150 kg
These figures vary depending on the model and manufacturer of each filter.
Having clarified this question, let us return to the work that now concerns us:
The task of replacing filter sand is not entirely straightforward, and can be more or less complicated depending on the specific model of your filter. In case you are not sure how to perform this task, we recommend contacting a professional.
In case you decide to do it yourself, the procedure to follow would be as follows:
- Close the water flow through the conduit that comes out of the skimmer and the return valve, closing all the taps and putting the selector lever in the CLOSED position". If there is no valve in the return pipe, it would be necessary to lower the nivel of the water below the impellers (jets from which water comes out to the pool).
- Empty the water filter by removing the screw cap that filters usually have at the base.
- Remove filter cover. Generally, filters have a side or top cover from where we will access the interior where the sand is located. In some cases, the same selector valve or head acts as a lid.
- Cover the diffusion pipe with a cloth or sponge to make sure that no sand gets in.
- Remove the sand from the filter, you can help yourself with a saucepan. You will notice that at the bottom there are "crepines", small filters located at the base of the filter, be very careful not to damage them when you finish removing the sand.
- Rinse the inside of the filter with a hose to remove any traces of sand that may be embedded in the base.
- Checking the crepines, with the filter once emptied of sand and water can unscrew the crepines and check their condition. It is advisable to replace them every other sand changes generally.
- Fill the filter with new sand with the specific load of your model. It is very important to plug the pipe inside with a cloth or plastic. The base cap should be closed.
- Close the filter cover, make sure that there is no sand left in the gasket of the cover, as it could generate water leaks. In case the joint is dry, it can be lubricated with neutral petroleum jelly. Do not use "multipurpose product".
- Open the water pass and start the sequence: "Rinse" for 30 seconds and then "Wash" for 5 minutes. Repeat the sequence until you see that the water comes out clean.
- Now, we can put the filter back into Filtration mode.
If everything has gone correctly, we already have a filter with new sand for 2, 3 or 5 more years.
